I like that when I listen to the radio on Alexa, they don't air local commercials so they fill in with a 'This day in sports/or music history'.

Me too. The one I heard was this week in history Herbert Hoover became the first U.S. President to have a telephone at his desk. They had access to one but never on the desk.

That's interesting because I think I heard that Garfield was the first president to talk on a phone and that's a lot of time between Garfield and Hoover.
Spoiler:
I wonder if Garfield is afraid of Hoover... because cats are naturally afraid of vacuum cleaners.

Garfield probably was the first President to talk on the phone but no President had one on his desk until Hoover. It apparently took a while to have a desk phone.

Oh, I heard it long before that. It was in my dad's record cabinet next to Beethoven's second, Handel's 4th, and a 5th from Jack Daniels.

Mac Murray College in Illinois closed this week after 174 years.
The Gophers might have played them in non-conference football a few times many decades ago.

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — A central Illinois college will close its doors after 174 years due to declining enrollment and other financial challenges.

The State Journal-Register reports the chairman of the Mac Murray College board of trustees said Friday the four-year liberal arts college in Jacksonville will close at the end of the spring semester. Charles O’Connell said there was no viable path forward for the college, and cited rising costs and an insufficient endowment as factors.

“The board spent more than a year exploring potential new sources for capital, but we were unable to solve the serious financial difficulties facing us,” O’Connell said. “We deeply regret the decision and are sorry for the disruption and disappointment it will have for everyone in the Mac family.”

Methodist clergy founded the college as the Illinois Conference Female Academy in 1846. The name was changed several times, and in 1955 the board of trustees established a college for men. The two colleges merged as MacMurray College in 1969.

The college currently has 527 full-time students and 101 faculty and staff. Students already have moved off campus and are taking classes online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The college has negotiated transfer agreements for students at other Illinois colleges. The future of the 60-acre Jacksonville campus wasn’t immediately clear.

I think I read that Gretzky's first NHL All-Star game was Gordie Howe's last.

He made a brief return to the NHL in 1979–80, playing one season with the Hartford Whalers, then retired at age 52.
Gordon Howe OC (March 31, 1928 – June 10, 2016) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. From 1946 to 1980, he played twenty-six seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) and six seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA); his first 25 seasons were spent with the Detroit Red Wings.

Two months after the signing of the Vietnam peace agreement, the last U.S. combat troops leave South Vietnam as Hanoi frees the remaining American prisoners of war held in North Vietnam. America’s direct eight-year intervention in the Vietnam War was at an end. In Saigon, some 7,000 U.S. Department of Defense civilian employees remained behind to aid South Vietnam in conducting what looked to be a fierce and ongoing war with communist North Vietnam.

Army Master Sgt. Max Beilke was the last American combat soldier to leave Vietnam. He grew up in Alexandria.
