It hasn’t happened yet, no. We’re in uncharted territory right now. Interest rates have never been lower, stimulus has never been higher. If Covid runs wild this winter, which I believe it will, we could very easily be careening toward a cliff with no brakes. About the only brakes we would have are negative interest rates for lenders and repealing the Asshole’s tariffs.

Thought I heard Nasdaq reached a new all time high......that's good, right?!
Re: Stock market rubes
No we're at all time high's here...I'm balls to the wall long equities
Re: Stock market rubes
I keep thinking early October, which has me scared jumping into some long term stonks that keep pushing higher and higher. Lot of short plays or undervalued dividends on my end.
The threat towards Alibaba could be a big one.

Thanks, mate.Face The Facts wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 8:06 amOpen an account with an online broker. (Like etrade).flexbuffchest wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 7:00 amSo let's say a froob wants to break his stock cherry, how would they go about doing it?
Fund it with some cash. (usually with a transfer from an online bank account)
Find a stock you want to buy, and click buy.
Set the number of shares.
Watch the performance.
Many people "Buy and hold".
You buy a fund called an ETF (exchange traded fund). It's a fund that carries portions of shares of many companies and pretty much goes up or down similar to the whole stock market.
VTO or VTI would be your option there.
If you want to be more risky, trade independent stocks. (Like Apple AAPL, Amazon, AMZN, etc., or do some research to find your own diamond in the rough that might go up in price).

Buy $RTX instead. More diversified company in that type of space.

Add some Tesla today.
Traded out of a position in a mid-cap ETF that was up. Split about half off to take in some gains.
I went heavy on CSCO Friday. That's a longer term hold, but I don't see Cisco not rebounding in price from that discount.

S&P hit a record high shortly after markets opened today.
Re: Stock market rubes
More CSPs today. Nice opening them when the stock is down, then seeing it take off up 7% on the day immediately after.

Wonder how many companies used government money to do stock buybacks?
Re: Stock market rubes
Anyone play around with NVDA today? I bought a $490 call this morning, went to do some shit around the yard, and came back to find it at $1,900.
That was nice.
That was nice.

Should have just bought OSTK at 40 instead of the CSPs. Currently at 120.j2j wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 4:59 pmT, O, and OSTK.
T and O are solid dividend producers that I already own, so if I end up with more at a reduced price, no big deal. Winner winner.
OSTK is a security that's gone through the roof, with a healthy future. Would have loved to get in on a few months ago. So again, if I get it at a reduced price, fine, if not it's free money.
Tough right now because we're approaching a lot of earnings reports. Lot of normally solid stocks to write against might miss earnings goals pretty bad and cause drops.

Goddamn, I knew OSTK rang a bell. For the life of me I couldn’t remember where from. I missed out on that one.j2j wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 12:51 pmShould have just bought OSTK at 40 instead of the CSPs. Currently at 120.j2j wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 4:59 pmT, O, and OSTK.

Re: Stock market rubes
I suggested ORN stock a few weeks ago. A dredging and construction company. After I did, it went up about 16% in about a weeks time...not trying to tout myself, but setting up the story.
I have more invested in ORN than I do any other stock in my portfolio. It seemed/seems like such a bargain, that I just kept adding to the point where it represented about 40% of my portfolio. That's a lot of risk, and more than I am usually willing to take, but the price was so enticing. And minor correction to my original OP on it, my average buy in price was $2.77 per share, not 2.79.
Anyway, it went up about 20% from my buy in price. I'm feeling great about it, and its got a lot of momentum...then last week, out of nowhere, a fire in Corpus Christi. The fire whipes out one of the dredging boats, injures many on board, and worse, kills at least two crew members and 2 more are missing...the stock plummets below my average buy in price.
A fucking fire. Something I never considered when throwing wads of money at this stock. The stock has rebounded some to where I still have a profit (minimal though), but the momentum is all gone. It was a not so friendly reminder to keep a well balanced portfolio, and not put too much faith in one stock.
Also, a disclaimer. I realize my money is a lot less important than the crew members on board. Such a tragedy.

This is where playing the market on a specific stock feels like gambling, and not sound gambling.bubu dubu. wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 11:05 pmI suggested ORN stock a few weeks ago. A change in weather or an unexpected fire can wreak havoc on a stock's individual performance.

The stock price, yes; the run it went on pushed the price of my contract from $385 to $1,900. Sorry for the confusion.Chuck North wrote: ↑Tue Aug 25, 2020 10:33 am

Love me some T. Its like watching paint dry, but in a good way. So easy to add to your position, and watch your dividend grow.

Grabbed me some Walmart around $134 this week too. Was lucky enough to grab it right when the news came out they were putting a strong offer up with Microsoft for TikTok. Looks like the Walmart/Microsoft bid is in the lead now. I'm hoping for a deal to be announced on Monday, if not, I'll short it if it drops below $138 for a tiny profit. If they do win the TikTok bid, I'll expect $200+ within two years.

Pioneer Aviation should skyrocket as soon as the defense contract gets the OK from the Air Force, in the next couple of weeks, to start retro-fitting certain aircraft with SCRAM-jet engines (think project Aurora, but more Black OPsy and more current) . Looks to possibly be north of 400 as soon as mid-November.
