THIS DAY IN HISTORY JULY 20

1969
First Moon landing
On this day in 1969, the Eagle lunar landing module, carrying U.S. astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin (“Buzz”) Aldrin, landed on the Moon, and several hours later Armstrong became the first person to set foot on its surface.
I absolutely marvel at this achievement.

there's a good thread in the archives that ran last year during this time commemorating the 50th anniversary. just use the search function if you want to read it.

Might have to, got a conference call at 1:00!

I just read the Wikpedia article on it, which I've done several times. There's this alluring entry (which I am paraphrasing):

Aldrin broke a circuit breaker while entering the Eagle, the one that coordinated the ignition of the engine to lift the LEM off from the moon to rendezvous with the Columbia orbiter. This could have jeopardized the ability to leave the moon's surface. After some discussion, Aldrin and Armstrong found that a ballpoint pen would be able to function in the breaker's place

It goes on to say they could have just re-circuited things so it would have work but those guys said "Eh, fuck it, this Bic pen ought to do it fine". Just amazing.

Apparently, it didn’t work so well and it traumatized the crowd witnessing the execution so much, they moved to ban any future electrical chair executions. It was all part of the propaganda surrounding Westinghouse and Tesla’s AC current vs Edison’s and jP Morgan’s backed DC current - the “War of the Currents” was perpetrated by Edison and his GE company backed by JP Morgan. AC proved to be far more cost effective because you didn’t need a power plant every mile and could put them further away - away from were people lived and close to places like Niagara Falls, where the hydro power would generate electricity for the NE to this day.
